At St Mary’s we believe that learning a foreign language gives children an opportunity to broaden their horizons, stretch their thinking and provide them with a wonderful social and cultural experience. All of our children in years 3 to 6 learn Spanish through listening, speaking, role-playing, singing songs and through playing games.
We are lucky to have our own specialist Spanish teacher who encourages our children to think about how the language works, and to compare Spanish with their own language. Our lessons provide excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.
Learning another language also gives our children a new perspective on the world, encouraging them to understand their own cultures and those of others. The natural links between languages and other areas of the curriculum can enrich the overall teaching and learning experience.
How to help your child at home
We don’t expect everyone to be able to speak fluent Spanish at home, but by asking your children what they are learning, asking them to demonstrate what they have learnt, and encouraging them to play online Spanish games, will all help to reinforce their learning.
Find below some online games your child could play at home to help them with their Spanish.
